Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves resting in a chamber while breathing pure oxygen under elevated pressure. This therapy was originally developed for conditions such as decompression sickness and diabetic ulcers but is now being explored as a supportive option for Long COVID and conditions like POTS.

How It Works

The goal of HBOT is to increase the amount of oxygen delivered to tissues throughout the body. This may benefit patients experiencing fatigue, poor oxygen utilization in muscles, brain fog, and inflammation. By enhancing tissue oxygenation, HBOT can support cellular repair and reduce oxidative stress.

What the Research Says

Emerging studies suggest that HBOT may help alleviate common symptoms of Long COVID. These include fatigue, brain fog, and poor sleep quality. One study noted significant improvements in attention span, energy levels, and sleep that lasted for several months. Another clinical trial found that HBOT reduced strain on the heart.

Considerations and Ongoing Research

While HBOT shows promise, it remains an experimental treatment for Long COVID. Insurance coverage is not currently available, and treatment protocols are still evolving. Some patients experience benefits after just a few sessions, while others may require a longer course. The therapy is generally low risk and well tolerated.

A Supportive Option

For patients managing complex chronic illness, HBOT may serve as a helpful adjunct to other therapies. It can complement treatments for MCAS, pelvic venous disease, nutritional deficiencies, and graded physical rehabilitation.
